Festival Del Viento 2016 (Riviera Nayarit)
The Wind Festival is returning to Riviera Nayarit! The best national and international kitesurfers will compete in this major event that is becoming a new tradition in Mexico. It takes place in our neighborhood, in nearby Bucerías, just few minutes from Punta de Mita.
From May 20-22, world-class participants of this nautical sport will compete on the beach in Bucerías.
For those who are not familiar with kitesurfing, it is a dynamic and appealing sport where riders mount a sufboard that is powered by a kite allowing the athletes to attain high speeds on the water and make spectacular leaps, showing their abilities. And thanks to the wind currents in Bucerias, this region is considered among the best in the world for this sport.
This year the festival will feature four different categories:
Down Wind – This is definitely the most spectacular race of the festival because gathers a huge number of participants of all ages and levels. This competition begins in a strategic point, from where the wind will lead them to the coast. This race becomes a true spectacle, with more than 200 participants, and their colorful sails surfing the Banderas Bay waters.
Course Racing – Also known as Regata, the purpose of this competition is develop a smart strategy to sail through a traced routed marked with buoys. It requires an advanced knowledge about wind speed and direction to be able to move as fast as possible without missing the route. The competition has two modalities: Long Distance and Slalom.
Big Air – Another extreme sport competition to watch! As the names says, the Big Air requires good wind speed and great courage from the contender to jump as high as possible, surpassing 32 feet, holding tight to the kite bar.
