Carly Ozard in I Just Can't Cope-a-Cabana at the Red Room

Gary R. Beck - Beck's Best
November 5, 2016

Very talented Broadway star Carly Ozard returns here with an all-new show. Last season, Carly impressed audiences in the Puerto Vallarta area with her powerful voice and quickly became a local favorite with her "Midler on the Roof". This year's show, opening night for Act II Entertainment's fourth season, inspires listeners coping in this wild world. Although she reported she was recovering from a throat illness, she was in top rare form. Her soaring vocals were full and eased over and around the notes.

She appeared to a roar, swathed in a multicolored swirling dress matched by her dreadlock hair. The look complimented the twirling of her voice in high full notes. A white blanket covered herself, maybe with a box of doughnuts, protecting and serving as a coping mechanism to all that lie around her, and us. Her opening number was the fine, driving "It's Amazing". The message of this show is Love. She followed with a remarkable version of "The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me". Her projection was loving, dear, assertive and solid. Remarkable, to say the least.

When Carly smiled, the room opens with a glow. As she said the blanket gave her warmth and refuge from the outside, she recommended sharing it with a dear friend, possibly a lover. She sang "Bridge Over Troubled Water": "If you need a friend, I'm sailing right behind." The theme of the night came to fruition ending with "Imagine": "Imagine all the people living life in peace."

An enormous added bonus is for her run here, she will be bringing accomplished artists from New York and San Francisco, a couple each night. So, each of her shows will have a unique specialness.

Guest appearances this opening night included:

The Kinsey Sicks sang and made us laugh before the show and their next performance in Stages; Kami Desilets and Gabe Arciniega, who will be singing in the lounge of Encore Bar the season, and Kami stars at Stages in "Avenue Q".

Paul Fracassi gave a sneak preview from one of his three different shows he will be presenting this season:  "20th Century Crooners", "Walk Like A Man" and "Legends of the 50's and 60's". He demonstrated why he is adored and followed here with "December, 1963 [Oh What a Night]" and "Dawn [Go Away"]. Elvis Martínez of the upcoming "Legends of Mexico" and musical director Alfonso López treated everyone to a fine duet, "Roxanne".

Carly Ozard is an accomplished show woman and hearing that voice is reason enough to return again and again.
