"Rumours" was an enormous album for Fleetwood Mac and this show is a telling about not only that time period but how each member met and the early days of growing and becoming successful, only to watch it crumble as the various love relations floundered. Tonight reveals the truth behind some of the rumours. The ensemble formed for this run are fantastic in their musicianship and vocals, either solo, duo or group. The audience was right with them and attended to enjoy and groove to the familiar tunes presented by such a fine talented group on stage.
Tonight's group consists of six multi-talented actors/singers/musicians from last season’s wonderful salute to the Mamas and the Papas, "California Dreamin'": Joseph Dane, Stephanie Watts, Rhonda Padmos, Don Pope, Jesús Estrada and Daniel López, with each representing one of the original Fleetwood Mac band members. Don and Rhonda have performed locally for many years and Stephanie [of Los Muertos Brewery fame] is an original member of the Act II family, having performed in "Best Little Whorehouse in Texas".
"The Chain": "Listen to the wind blow, watch the sun rise. I can still hear you saying you would never break the chain" was slow drifting amongst the entourage and lent a wonderful feeling to the crowd. "Monday Morning": "Got to get some peace of mind" got everyone bouncing again and loving this group of fine local artists we had the pleasure to hear assembled with their voices, complimentary yet individually distinctive.
They sang 1968's "Black Magic Woman" written and recorded by their own Peter Green, but made into a smash hit a year later by Santana. It has the markings of the rock era in its chords and rhythm. They sang it as a song of the ages. The three lead vocals were submitted by Joseph Dane as Lindsey Buckingham, Rhonda Padmos as Christine McVie and Stephanie Watts as Stevie Nicks, the latter reckoned to be the voice of Fleetwood Mac. All three projected their songs in the light of their legend. But the stirringly impressive facet of tonight's show was every time they joined forces, singing in unison yet sporting their own voice, the band rocked and put their heart and soul into this historic music of Fleetwood Mac.
Act Two at Act II brought us the ultra-famous "You Make Loving Fun", with Christine on lead, a good rocking song fitted to the band's style so well. Next came Stevie in the fine voice of Stephanie singing the fabulous "Rhiannon". She swayed to the softness of the band, proving to be one of the highlights of the night. Super vocals were heard.
Song after song was produced by the group, all well-known to most in the room. "Rumours" was the top US album for 31 weeks and sold over sold over forty million copies worldwide, making it the eighth selling album of all time. Joseph and Stephanie related that the songs were marked by breakups, sadness and slams against their former lovers. The material was true to the current state of matters in the peaking group, yet they persevered and blended together as one. "Edge of Seventeen": "Just like a white winged dove sings a song" was terrific and brought back many memories. Their compositions were lyrical and poetic, making them memorable and hummable.
"Go Your Own Way" sent us out of the room with the vow to relate this evening to many friends, urging them to come witness and experience this show. We felt blessed that they had made such a gathering for the purpose of saluting one of the all-time top rock 'n' roll bands. This Southside area is truly "The theater district of Puerto Vallarta" as Danny Mininni has stated.
