Danny Mininni praised the entire crew for the quick assemblage of this musical/comedy/love story. "Plaza Suite" had to be cancelled at the last minute, after much social media pre-exposure. Another Neil Simon play was chosen and secured which gave everyone a mere five weeks planning, designing, rehearsing and presenting. In the show field, that is an incredibly short time and they pulled it off with flying colors. This performance is a must-see production.
The two leads, well-known to our community's theater-goers, are Alfonso López and Kami Desilets. Their characters are based on the true lives of music writer Marvin Hamlisch and lyricist Carole Bayer Sager, a team renowned for their delicious song output, a portion in Broadway shows as this Neil Simon play which debuted in 1979.
It also stars Roberto Duran, MaryJo Nelson, Eli Estrada and Ross Cornell in another in the string of hit plays and musicals from Act II Entertainment Stages this season. These four portray the 'inner voices' [The Girls and The Boys] of the star composing team. They danced, sang, smiled broadly as they changed the room settings between scenes, moving chairs, tables, pictures, doors and windows. They alone are a joy to observe and at times they bring laughter from the audience with their antics. All four have starred in hit plays on this stage and it was a delight seeing them all back again, unified, yet individually talented. Our Bahía de Banderas area is blessed with wonderful people exuding effervescent personalities.
As expected from this renown writing team, the songs are beautiful and memorable. The writing couple stands out as one of the world's finest in history and what you hear portrays them well. Vernon and Sonia, the lead characters, are seeking a sense of independence but also love for one another. The relationship starts rocky with "Fallin'", hopeful with "Workin' It Out" and "If He Really Knew Me" and bursting with joy with the title tune "They're Playing Our Song". But their quirky personalities clash, at times involving ego and sexism. Yet, they persist in their attempts at love "Just For Tonight" and "When You're In My Arms". Play-lovers must attend to learn how this odd relationship develops and finalizes. The ones present tonight all smiled and congratulated the entire cast on stage and behind the scenes. "Thank you for supporting the arts in Puerto Vallarta! We hope you enjoy our show." said Alfonso.
