This already traditional and colorful festival of ephemeral art on pavement, which in its latest edition had 130 participants, and this year will welcome the presence of Anne Hefferman, Meredith Morin, Cecelia Linayao, Phil Roberts and Melody Owens, professional artists in madonnari art from Santa Barbara. They will give a display of their great talent in this specific expression of art and they will also serve as judges of the event.
Madonnari art originated in Italy during the 16th century. Itinerant artists were brought to the cities and commissioned to paint the great cathedrals. Upon completion of the assignments, and the need to find some alternate mode of survival, they began to recreate the images of the construction on the pavement.
The term madonnari comes from the fact that these images originally were mostly madonnas.
In the United States, artists who practice this creative art expression are called "street painters" and in Germany, "Strassenmaler."
The first contest of this unique artistic expression of a documented festival took place in London in 1906. In 1972, the first international I Madonnari Festival Contest took place at Grazie di Curtatone, Italy. This is currently part of a two week festival celebration where the city streets are the scene of the feast.
In 1987, Wenner and Manfred Stader introduced the I Madonnari at Old Mission Santa Barbara, California. Today, this festival is traditionally celebrated in various countries such as Holland, Germany, USA, Israel and Thailand.
