Organizations of farmworkers and indigenous people announced the formal founding of the Indigenous and Campesino Front of Mexico this week, which they said aims to protect the country’s jungles and forests from destruction, as well as defend the rights of rural and indigenous communities.

According to the National Coordinator of the Plan de Ayala Movement (CNPA-MN), the Indigenous and Campesino Front of Mexico also aims to raise awareness about the negative effects of land invasions and water pollution, explaining that the organization will negotiate with agencies for support in conservation efforts.

Francisco Jiménez Pablo, leader of the CNPA-MN, said that the Indigenous and Campesino Front of Mexico was formed by common agreement among 600 representatives of different farmworkers and indigenous organizations at a meeting in Puebla.

Jiménez Pablo said that the new organization planned to hold its first protest, aimed at stopping a planned gas pipeline between Tlaxcala, Puebla and Morelos, on March 14. He said that the pipeline represents a threat to the biosphere in the regions along its route.

The second protest will be held on March 27 against the construction of the La Parota dam in Guerrero, which is opposed by area farmers who would be displaced by the dam.
