Attorney General Holder has called attention to the Justice Department's unprecedented efforts to combat heroin and prescription opiate abuse, to keep violent drug traffickers off of our streets, and to confront the recent uptick in heroin addiction through prevention and treatment as well as aggressive enforcement. Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr., calling the rise in deaths from overdoses of heroin and prescription painkillers an “urgent and growing public health crisis,” is outlining a series of efforts by the Justice Department to combat the epidemic.
At a time of growing public acceptance of marijuana use, Holder is drawing attention to the negative consequences of heroin. In a video message released early this week, Holder said heroin overdose deaths increased by 45 percent between 2006 and 2010.
He also urged all Americans to view the award-winning documentary "The Opiate Effect," below.
