Taleb Rifai, Secretary General of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO)

Mexico, a leader in world tourism, is an example because of the actions carried out in the sector, said Taleb Rifai, Secretary General of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) during the Fourth Ministerial Meeting of Tourism of the G20 (T20) held on May 15-16 in Merida, Yucatan state. Rifai also highlighted the tourist potential worldwide and predicted nearly one billion tourists by the end of this year, according to a communiqué of the Mexican Tourism Ministry.

He said that the sector has given signs of a positive growth, with 5.8 percent registered in the first quarter this year against the same period of 2011.

Mexican Secretary of Tourism Gloria Guevara said that the presence of her counterparts in the country will be essential to strengthen global tourism, and described the meeting as a bright opportunity for the tourist and travel industry, as it was held in Yucatan, which is part of the Mayan World.

She described the tourist industry as key for the development of world economy because it generates jobs and revenue.

The meeting of Tourism ministers of the G20 discussed the issue of job generation and was part of preparations for the Summit of Leaders of the Group, scheduled for Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, on June 18-19.

The meeting in Yucatan tried to define proposals for the mobility of visitors and the creation of jobs by boosting tourism worldwide.

Denmark, Spain, Chile, Colombia, Cambodia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Jamaica and Peru attended the meeting as guests, besides the G20.

Also attending were the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the International Labor Organization, the International Air Transport Association and the International Civil Aviation Organization.
