Orlando Jones's Ice Bucket Challenge Takes an Unexpected Turn (Orlando Jones)

Don’t get wet, just donate. That’s the message from a Mexican support group for people suffering from ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

If you’re Mexican and hoping to participate in the Ice Bucket Challenge, it’s not necessary to dump cold water on your head, you can simply donate money or time to assist victims, says Families and Friends of People with Motor Neuron Disease.

The organization is similar to the United States-based ALS Association, the recipient of donations from around the world through the Ice Bucket Challenge, in which people are challenged to pour a bucket of ice water on their heads and make a donation.

“It would be better to focus on learning more about the illness and be supportive of the people who have it,” said association president Armando Nava Escobedo.

Recognizing that the campaign has had a fortunate impact in the U.S. context, he said Mexico should look for other types of challenges to obtain donations, but one that doesn’t pose the chance of becoming ill or wastes water.

“Why suffer the pain of the shock? Why waste the water?”
