Former Mexican President Vicente Fox continued to be an outspoken advocate for marijuana legalization when he took questions from the media at Midland College on Tuesday morning.

When asked about the international drug trade, Fox said the “huge, mammoth consumption” of drugs is in the United States.

“How can you explain that this nation, being the most prohibitionist, being the most (strict in penalties) of those who consume drugs, is the one that consumes the most?” he said. “Prohibitions don’t work. The crusade and war against crime invoked by President Nixon, and he tried to impose it on the whole of the world, it was a total failure. It didn’t work. The war against crime in Mexico, carried on by (former Mexican President Felipe) Calderón and the Mexican Army, failure, a total failure. The trafficking has not been stopped.”

The solution, Fox said, is to move from prohibition to regulation.

“God bless the state of Washington, the state of Colorado, that have had the ambition to look for the right answer to the problem,” he said.

Fox cited public opinion polls that show a majority of Americans now favor marijuana legalization.
