This is a YOLO Racing slideshow that starts with a stock 1970 Volkswagen Beetle and shows the transformation that takes place as it is converted into a SCORE certified class 5/1600 desert racing machine. It finished 6th in class in the BAJA 1000 2008. (Ross Burden)

After a brief hiatus, a Vancouver off-road race team is heading back to Baja for its sixth go at one of the world’s most famous races.

Team YOLO (You Only Live Once), a group of seven Vancouver firefighters who love off-road racing, has always arrived in Mexico bearing gifts on behalf of Firefighters Without Borders Canada.

That meant equipment, gear, stuff that had been replaced in Vancouver but was desperately desired along the Baja peninsula, $100,000 worth so far. This year’s gift is something extra special: A pumper truck for Mexican firefighters.

...YOLO has come a long way since the team entered its car — a customized 1600cc beast under a VW Bug shell — in its first Baja race in 2008.
