MEXICALI, Baja California — What was to be the first same-sex marriage in Baja California ended in a stand-off Friday morning.

Fernando Urias Amparo, 37, and Victor Manuel Aguirre, 43, arrived at Mexicali City Hall in matching white suits, prepared to take their vows at 8:30 a.m.

But an official in the registrar’s office refused to perform the ceremony, saying only that she had “no information” to the crowd of family members, supporters and journalists.

This marks the third time that the couple had been unable to marry since they first tried a year and seven months ago. An order by the Mexican Supreme Court supposedly had cleared the way for the widely announced ceremony. But City Hall officials would not move forward with the ceremony, nor would they publicly explain their reasons.

“It is evident that they don’t want to assist us,” said the couple’s attorney, Jose Luis Marquez.
