For the first time ever, the Interior Ministry has declared a "gender alert" for 11 municipalities in the central State of Mexico in response to more than 1,500 femicides.
While welcoming the move, victims' families and activists had demanded that the gender alert be declared for the entire state and five others as well.
Years of silence, denial, and inaction by authorities in cases of gender-based violence have left deep distrust over officials' response capacity.
