Former Mexican President Vicente Fox is seething about U.S. contentions that his country is responsible for the flow of illegal drugs into this country. He says that’s hypocrisy.
“The country that most consumes drugs is the country that is not doing anything within the territory to fight the war,” Fox said in a recent interview from his presidential history center in Guanajuato.
...Fox, 73, who served as president of Mexico from Dec. 1, 2000, to Nov. 30, 2006, said last week that outlawing drugs is an utter failure, much like the 13 years of U.S. Prohibition.
“The country that most prohibits is the country that most consumes. How do you explain that?” Fox said. “Conclusion: Prohibitions don’t work. The United States government has to think about this and has to reach decisions like Washington state did, like Colorado state did. They decided to stop the prohibition based on the very successful story of alcohol 100 years ago.”
He believes the United States has only two options: “No. 1, you stop the drugs when they cross the borders into U.S. territory — not in Mexico — or No. 2, you legalize. Actions should start with marijuana, but eventually it should be applied to all drugs.”
