Leftist Politicians Launch New Movement to Turn 'Social Majority' Into 'Political Majority' Fox News Latino

Leading leftist politicians, including three-time presidential candidate Cuauhtemoc Cardenas, have launched Por Mexico Hoy, a movement they described as a "collective effort to rethink the project of the nation."

"We do not want to build a political party, but we are going to play a role in politics through a political and social front that projects the need to live democracy in the best way possible in its collective dimension, representing the public arena, which belongs to everyone," Sen. Alejandro Encinas said in an address Saturday at the movement's launch.

Encinas called on those attending the rally at Mexico City's Estacion Indianilla Cultural Center to focus on specific causes and organize people at the grassroots level in neighborhoods, boroughs, agricultural communities, schools, universities and workplaces.

The goal is to "turn this social majority into a political majority," Encinas said.

The idea of creating a movement for direct citizen participation in politics was conceived by Cardenas, who resigned on Nov. 25, 2014, from the Party of the Democratic Revolution, or PRD, the party he founded in 1989 and served as standard bearer in the 1994 and 2000 presidential elections.
