Mexico is Most Dangerous LatAm Country for Journalists (teleSUR English)

Enrique Peña Nieto took to Twitter this Sunday November 1st to congratulate, in English and Spanish, the drivers, fans and organizers of the Formula One race, but he didn’t have a single word for the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, commemorated worldwide on Monday.

Secretary of Government Relations, Miguel Ángel Osorio Chong, mimicked his flippant leader, writing, "an exciting Sunday of races with the Formula One Mexican Grand Prix. A world-class event for our great Mexico!" This, from the official who let Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán escape and aspires to be president of Mexico.

That silence from Mexico’s leader and his second-in-command about such a sensitive, international matter explains why Mexico is ranked first in journalist murders on the continent—one in three—and why there is 90% impunity for crimes committed against them. The killings and attacks of journalists doesn’t bother Peña. Nor did it bother Felipe Calderon [President, 2006-2012] or Vicente Fox [President, 2000-2006].

According to the National Commission for Human Rights (CNDH), 107 journalists have been killed in the 15 years of their three governments. And Calderón’s—whom they called “murderer” at the racetrack—has been the bloodiest: totaling 47 attacks on media businesses since 2006 and 20 missing journalists.
