Preparations are already underway south of the border to welcome Pope Francis, whose visit in February will bring him closer to Arizona than any pope has been in almost 30 years.
The visit, Feb. 12-17, will take him south to the Mexican border with Guatemala and will end in Juarez, just across from El Paso and a seven-hour drive from Phoenix.
Flanked by the Rio Grande, Pope Francis will celebrate Mass on Feb. 17 for immigrants, as well as families and victims of violence, at the Juarez fairgrounds, located right across the river from El Paso.
During his trip to Juarez, the pope will spend about 90 minutes with prisoners at a Mexican jail, according to the Vatican. He will also meet with businessmen and workers from the city’s extensive maquiladora industry.
The visit to Juarez is expected to draw thousands of visitors from the United States. Take a look at some things to know if you plan to visit at azcentral.com
