U.S. Cruise Ship Arrives in Havana, Cuba for Historic Visit (MSNBC)
The first U.S.-to-Cuba cruise in 50 years set sail on Sunday with more than a dozen Cuban-Americans among its 700 passengers, according to Arnold Donald, the general manager of Carnival Cruise Line.
The presence of Cuban-Americans on the Adonia cruise liner is significant as it was only in April that Cuba lifted its ban on Cubans traveling to the island by sea.
Donald made the announcement at a press conference at the Port of Miami before the cruise liner began its voyage to the Caribbean island.
Carnival affiliate Fathom, starting Sunday, will operate cruises to Cuba with the Adonia every two weeks, an effort that Donald said is "contributing to history" and having a "very positive" impact on society.
He added that it is a "tremendous honor" for Carnival to be the first company to offer cruises from the U.S. to Cuba after receiving approval from both the U.S. and Cuban governments to offer the tourist package to "everyone."
