Four volcanic islands situated off the Pacific coast of Mexico were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. (teleSUR English)

UNESCO has added the Revillagigedo Archipelago off Mexico’s Pacific coast to the World Heritage List.

The archipelago is a unique ecosystem with four uninhabited volcanic islands, San Benedicto, Socorro, Roca Partida and Clarión, south of the Baja California Peninsula.

“It is an absolutely exceptional and practically isolated place, but it is significant to completing a common effort along all the Pacific Ocean coast in the Americas,” said Nuria Sanz, director of UNESCO’s office in Mexico.

This addition to the UNESCO list fills in an arc of World Heritage islands, including Ecuador’s Galapagos, Colombia’s Malpelo and Costa Rica’s Cocos.
