The CNTE teachers’ union has amassed an impressive collection of trucks, buses and cars in Michoacán, and at least 24 of the latter are brand-new vehicles.
Security officials estimate that nearly 200 vehicles have been allegedly stolen by the union, from auto transporters to petroleum tankers.
Seventy-five vehicles of all kinds are being stored in Turicuaro in the municipality of Nahuatzen, a state official told the newspaper Reforma, and 24 or 25 are brand-new cars that were being carried by transporters to automotive dealers.
They were among vehicles that were hijacked by teachers protesting education reforms on the Siglo 21 freeway between Lázaro Cárdenas and Pátzcuaro. Others include tanker trucks, government vehicles and delivery trucks.
Another 115 are being stored in Arantepacua, also in Nahuatzen, and Carapan, in Chilchota.
