The organizations Border Rights Clinic and Al Otro Lado de Los Angeles, carried out a workshop called, "Know Your Rights," at the Caracol Hostel with the objective of giving immigrants first hand knowledge of their rights and legal methods they have to seek asylum in the United States.

In an interview with AFN, Nicole Ramos, an immigration specialist attorney, detailed how this is an activity to share information on how to prepare a petition for asylum and know if the person qualifies for it.

She added they also share stories of how the United States authorities do whatever is possible to deny entrance in the county and the processes of intimidation that sometimes are used in the process and how they do not explain their rights.

She explained, for example, "if you are an Mexican or Central American, and you come before the US authorities seeking asylum, they lie and tell you there is not asylum and they are not accepting Mexicans," then they make you sign a paper authorizing your deportation.

In addition to that, she said they also record on video where they make applicants say they do not fear for their safety where they originally came from, and use this as evidence against them and deport them.
