Update: Calm Returns to Mexican Resort City After Deadly Shootout (Latin American Herald Tribune)

Police in Mexico yesterday arrested a group of delinquents following a gunfight in the center of Cancun.

When called to the scene, the police were greeted by the offenders with a volley of gunshots, according to the account by the local prosecutor.

What followed was a heated shootout where one of the delinquents was killed and two more wounded, while tourists and locals took refuge in nearby shops.

Eventually the group attempted to flee, and the police followed in what was described in local reports as a "spectacular" car chase across the city.

After pursing the offenders for five kilometers, the authorities placed them under arrest.

In April, the government in Mexico announced an increased security presence in order to deal with violence as a result of drug trafficking.
