Únete a Latinos for Obama (BarackObamadotcom)

Singer Ricky Martin asks Hispanics to vote for President Barack Obama’s reelection in a video in Spanish in which he says that the incumbent is “committed” to the Latino community.

“I’m proud to be Latino and to see how much we’ve contributed to this country, from standing out at the best schools, starting businesses, to shaping American culture through art and music,” says the artist in the video, which mixes the faces of Hispanics with images of Obama campaigning.

Martin, who hosted an Obama fundraiser in New York in May, tells Hispanics that the Democrat must be reelected “so that this community can continue to advance.”

He notes that there are 50 million Latinos living in the United States and that their votes could decide the election on Nov. 6, “but only if we work together so that everybody knows how important it is to make ourselves heard in November.”

In an allusion to the controversial immigration issue, the musician says he is pleased with the Deferred Action initiative launched by the Obama administration last August and which suspends for two years the deportation of undocumented students who came to the United States as children.

Martin is not the only Latino artist who has publicly expressed his support for Obama’s reelection. The list includes singer Marc Anthony, Spain’s Antonio Banderas and actress Eva Longoria, among others.

Obama leads Republican rival Mitt Romney among Hispanic registered voters by a margin of 70 percent to 20 percent, according to a new survey published Wednesday.
