MEXICO CITY - Unemployment in Mexico was unchanged in March from a year earlier at 4.6% as an increased number of people seeking work offset private-sector job creation, according to government data published Friday.
The National Statistics Institute, or Inegi, said adjusted for seasonality the unemployment rate slipped 0.05 percentage point from February, to 5.12%.
Labor Ministry data released earlier in the week showed just over 132,000 new formal private-sector jobs were added in March, bringing the total number of workers registered for the health and other services with the Mexican Social Security Institute to 15.7 million. The IMSS workers account for just under a third of the total workforce of around 50 million.
Urban unemployment, which measures labor conditions in the country's 32 largest cities, was unchanged from a year ago at 5.4%, while underemployment rose to 8.3% from 8.1% in March 2011.
