I really don't now what it is to be a teacher, but I imagine that helping build a child's intelligence, maintaining their amazement, igniting their imagination and teaching one of the greatest creations of history, writing, is not easy. Neither is helping them enter the world of mathematical abstraction.

If the essence of all work, whatever it may be, is the construction of the future, that of the teacher is perhaps the most decisive. The teacher shows the outside world to their students, to make them look further away from what, until then, they had looked at, and to look with closed eyes at their own inner life, where dreams are part of life's projects.

... Surely being a teacher means a lot more than what I have written. How many have helped us define a vocation? How many others to avoid a false path?

When a teacher fails the mission of a teacher, he fails the calling of a society's future. She fails even when the teacher comes to the classroom as mere means of economic survival, when it is because he couldn't find another place to work.
