From the Saturday Farmer's Market Co-op...

We got off to a bit of a slow start last Saturday with the rain starting about 8 a.m. Our vendors don’t have the luxury of looking out the window, seeing gray skies and angry clouds and crawling back into bed with a sigh of indulgence but, by 10, the skies had cleared and we were up to speed as usual with our devoted clients coming in late for bagels, cinnamon buns, fresh bread and free-range eggs.

Lisa Love has a miniature representation of the huge tile job she will start soon at the famous Casa Kimberley, formerly Elizabeth Taylor’s house. She told me a fun thing… the electricity bill still comes to that house with RICHARD BURTON’S name on it! May both of those souls rest in peace with the gratitude of our entire city for their love of each other and Puerto Vallarta. Good luck with the massive project, Lisa!

Our Mr. Bill and partner Alejandro are back in Vallarta – and our Market - after a brief stint in the wilds of Ajiijic. Bill’s fascination with Day of the Dead things continues with happily macabre aprons and tee shirts covered with skulls and the like. A ‘normal’ shirt popped into view last week with lovely baby turtles crawling towards their destiny – silkscreened in gold on green. Very nice, Mr Bill! He has some new – also macabre (what else?) – photos of a discovery he made outside of Guadalajara. Ask him to show you. And don’t forget Bill’s cooling ties – guaranteed to instantly drop your body  temperature ten degrees! Alejandro will be back flipping hamburgers again soon. Remember them? Gigantic!

Jamie has two new and distinctly flavored honeys available – one is made from dandelion flowers and the other from wild flowers. What I want to know is: how the hell do you train a bee to only collect
pollen from certain flowers?

Benita continues to produce intricate and beautiful sandals Some are completely hand macrame’d - incredibly time-consuming and, turns out, very comfortable on your feet. The other ones (that I love the best) are covered in rhinestones and jewels of every size, facet and color. Man, do they make a statement! Not so comfortable maybe, but who cares when you are dazzling! Her line of hand bags – again of every size, shape, texture and color – grows each week as new fabric becomes available. She is down to three only Marilyn Monroe totes with deep zippered pockets inside and out. Durable, practical and distinctly MARILYN! From change purses, little-girly bags to swanky suede-like shoulder/strapped laptop protectors, Benita will keep everything you have to pack around, protected and handy, and they are not expensive.

I have been experimenting lately with beeswax I brought back from Canada and will be debuting beeswax votive candles at the Market, made entirely by solar energy. Seriously! Well, my fingers helped a little but no electricity or gas was used to manufacture the votives. Neat, wouldn’t you say? No added scents or colors, just sun-melted beeswax. Have to love the tropics!

Remember, our Co-op Market is the only one open every Saturday, every week of the year, so join us at the Paradise Community Center in Old Town Vallarta, 127 Pulpito, every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Come hungry!
