Just 25 or 30 minutes south of downtown Puerto Vallarta you’ll find the quite beach of Yelapa; while far from being large, its enchantment is enormous. Its few inhabitants have a humble, quiet life and its ambiance is completely relaxed and relaxing.

There is just one way to get there: on a water taxi, obtained by contacting a tour agency or just arriving at the Playa Los Muertos pier and asking about hours and availability. Another option (the least recommendable) is to take a car or bus to Mismaloya or Boca de Tomatlán; these have very specific departure times which is why I recommend doing your research before grabbing your bags and getting ready to go.

One of the benefits of this paradise is that it is surrounded by lush greenery; if you love nature it is a fascinating and fun experience. The various hotels and palapa restaurants offer first-class service with prices to suit any budget.

To delight your palate there is everything from breakfast, beachfront lunches and fresh seafood to candlelight dinners. The famous (and acclaimed) pies are a treat and a tradition. With flavors like coconut, chocolate, cheese, lime, pecan and banana they are made entirely with natural ingredients. You can buy them from the “Señora de los Pays” or “Pie lady” who sells them along the beach and in the restaurants. If possible look for them in the morning when they are sold as “freshly made bread.” My favorite flavor? – The cheese pie. Also, don’t forget to try the raicilla! It’s a classic regional liquor made from agave.

When it comes to fun and entertainment the most popular water activities for all ages are kayaking, parasailing, snorkeling and diving. For those who prefer to stay on land there are excursions in the mountains and jungle; one of the most popular places is the waterfall, reached on foot or by horseback.

With family, as couple or with friends…Yelapa has something special for everyone!
