Introducing the Dog Aging Project (DogAgingProject.org)

The University of Washington has announced that several donors have pledged a total of $2.5 million to help fund the School of Medicine’s Dog Aging Project. The largest canine health study in the world, with thirty-two thousand dogs and their owners participating, is aimed at helping companion dogs and people live longer, healthier lives together. Most of the dogs in the program currently are participating in an observational longitudinal study of aging. In addition, the project is conducting a double-blind, placebo-controlled veterinary clinical trial of the medicine rapamycin (Test of Rapamycin in Aging Dogs, or TRIAD), which has been proven to extend the lives of lab animals, and discoveries made by the Dog Aging Project could be translatable to people.

The funding will expand the trial to include more study locations and to increase the number of dogs enrolled. Donors include Coinbase founder and CEO Brian Armstrong; physician Peter Attia; Protocol Labs founder and CEO Juan Benet; Paradigm and Coinbase co-founder Fred Erhsam; Adam Fisher of Bessemer Venture Partners; author Tim Ferriss and the Saisei Foundation; Stellar co-founder and chief technology officer and Astera Institute founder Jed McCaleb; food author Darya Rose; and internet entrepreneur Kevin Rose.

“Targeting biological aging is twenty-first century medicine, with the potential to greatly enhance healthy longevity for both people and our pets," said  Dog Aging Project co-director Matt Kaeberlein. "TRIAD will provide the first clinical evaluation of an intervention that may increase lifespan and health span from this approach. This generous donation will greatly accelerate our research and bring us closer to this goal."
