The Metropolitan Security and Commerce Alliance of Puerto Vallarta and Bahía de Banderas (AMESYC), through its delegate in Bahía de Banderas, Miguel Torres, warned about the new modalities of electronic frauds that are on the rise both in the country and in the region.

During the alliance's first session of 2024, the delegate informed members about the data shared at the national security meeting organized by COPARMEX in mid-January. This meeting addressed issues such as extortion and cybersecurity, with the participation of commanders from the Mexican Army and the National Guard. According to reports, in 2023 electronic frauds increased by 20%, generating more than 27 thousand reports that subsequently became complaints.

Cases of extortion have been reported in department stores such as Coppel in Jalisco, one of the members of the alliance, where at least five cases were reported in the Guadalajara metropolitan area. These frauds involved economic losses of up to 250 thousand pesos, by offering appliances or screens at very low prices through WhatsApp and requesting deposits, thus benefiting from people's lack of training or information.

Although in the metropolitan area of Puerto Vallarta and Bahía de Banderas no economic losses have been registered due to these frauds, the need for more training in this matter for all members of the alliance is highlighted. Other variants of fraud have been observed, such as virtual kidnapping or loans.

"In 2021 the crime that was in fashion worldwide and the one that prevailed was human trafficking, but 2022 and 2023 had much growth in financial crimes and is where all this is leaning; it is precisely the electronic frauds, how people take advantage of the lack of training or lack of dissemination," he shared.

Therefore, he pointed out that, although these frauds can be considered common in the business environment, it is necessary to increase the awareness among the general public. In this sense, he announced the opening of an informative forum in the coming days, aimed at both businessmen and citizens, in collaboration with the National Guard in the region, in order to raise awareness and prevent this type of crime.
