Pop quiz! What's your body's biggest organ — It's your first line of defense against infection, and it's your most visible predictor of age-related disease?

Answer: your skin. That's right. Your skin does a lot more than just cover you. With its 20 trillion immune cells and 1,000 types of friendly bacteria, it continually fights off germs, toxins, and even cancer. Not to mention that it makes you waterproof!

Skin damage releases harmful chemicals that enter your bloodstream and inflame your entire body, including your heart and your brain. It's now linked to Alzheimer's, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

With November marking National Healthy Skin Month in the U.S., this is a good time to make sure you're taking these actions to keep your skin in peak health.

  • Wear sunscreen every day, all year, outdoors and in. More than 80% of UV rays can penetrate cloud cover and some window glass.
  • Clean your skin with neutral-pH cleansers that allow your skin to retain its natural oils.
  • Eat lots of fruits, veggies, and healthy fats. Avoid sugar, which erodes your skin’s collagen and creates inflammation.
