Cancer remains the third leading cause of death in Mexico and every year 128 thousand new cases are detected, reported the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) on the eve of the World Day against the disease.

This body reminded that on a global scale this evil causes a 13 percent of all deaths, with seven millions 600 thousand deaths reported for this cause in 2008, and it is estimated that by 2030 cancer will represent a 13,1 percent of all deaths in the planet.

Mexico nearly repeats the same percentage, since the most recent data known by INEGI indicate that 13 percent of all the deaths happened in 2012 were caused by some kind of tumor, out of them 93.4 percent correspond to malignant neoplasms.

According to this institute, this year's motto of the World Cancer Day was debunking myths, among them the belief that developing the disease carries a death sentence, when its timely detection and treament make it possible to survive.

However INEGI inidicated that the success of the fight against cancer depends on institutional factors such as accessibility, staff training in order to provide an accurate diagnosis, adequate treatment and follow-up, imaging studies, in addition to the individual factors and the characteristics of the tumor.

Out of the deaths which happen in the country, tha largest amount is related to malignant tumors in digestive, genital, respiratory organs, and breast.

In the case of men over 20 years, the most common type of cancer presented is in the digestive organs (24 percent), followed by tumors in the genital organs (12.2 percent).

On the other hand, in women over this age, the most frequent type is breast cancer, which gathers 30 percent of all cases, followed by cancer in the genital organs with a 16.7 percent.
