The Crusade Against Hunger initiative was announced in January, 2013 by President Enrique Peña Nieto in the city of Las Margaritas, in the southern state of Chiapas. (Presidency of the Republic)

MAZATLAN - In keeping with the Mexican National Crusade Against Hunger, directors of the National Chamber of the Fish and Aquaculture Industry united their forces this week to donate two tons of fresh fish to 2,000 families with limited economic resources living on the periphery of the city.

The distribution yesterday brings the total amount of fish given away this year by businessmen Fernando Medrano Freeman, Jesús Loya Gaxiola, Jaime Osuna Magaña and Humberto Becerra Batista to seven tons.

Becerra Batista, vice-president of Canainpesca, said they have been distributing free fish for several years with the assistance of the municipal DIF (family services) office, Alcoholics Anonymous groups and the Rotary Club.
