President Enrique Peña Nieto has announced a 6.24 percent increase in teachers salaries, which he said is the appropriate outcome of the ongoing collective bargaining process.

Leading a celebration of Teacher’s Day in a breakfast at Los Pinos last Thursday, the president said that his relationship with the National Education Workers Union (SNTE), led by Juan Díaz de la Torre, is respectful and institutional.

He also acknowledged the important role of the union for the implementation of educational reform and publicly lauded both the SNTE and the Public Education Secretariat (SEP).

He said there was a need to not only “fortify directors of schools, but also teachers and parents, as well as the administration of every school.”

He also recognized his own efforts in updating the Professional Teaching Service legal framework for the 2014-2015 school year. This will afford some 14,300 new teaching vacancies to both elementary schools and high schools.
