NATAL, Brazil — Oribe Peralta scored on a rebound in the 59th minute as Mexico opened the World Cup with a 1-0 win in Group A over Cameroon on Friday in a torrential downpour.
Mexico had to hold on in extra time as goalie Guillermo Ochoa made a diving stop of a Cameroon header.
Mexico had a frustrating first half when two goals by Giovanni Dos Santos were disallowed because of offside calls.
Dos Santos appeared to score in the 11th minute but the linesman ruled him to be offside. In the 29th minute, he headed in a corner but again was called for offside in front of Cameroon goalkeeper Charles Intandje.
Rain began four hours before kickoff and continued throughout the game, making the field in the coastal city slippery.
Mexico will play host nation and tournament favorite Brazil at Fortaleza at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Here Are The Bogus Offside Calls That Cost Mexico 2 Goals:
The first came when Giovani dos Santos took a pass in the middle of the box and quickly drove the ball into the back of the net. But the refs flag was up, calling dos Santos offside. However, replays clearly showed that dos Santos was not behind the defender when the pass was made.
Later, on a corner kick, dos Santos appeared to head the ball into the net for a goal, but was once again called offside. But replays showed that not only was the ball not deflected by a Mexican player, but that dos Santos was not behind the last defender.
