President Enrique Peña Nieto has said that one of the ways that Mexico will be combating deforestation is through sowing 190 million new plants.
In kicking off the 2014 National Reforestation Campaign in Chignahuapan, Puebla, Peña Nieto announced that deforestation has been reduced by 50 percent in the first half of the year, in comparison with the same period in 2013.
However, he added that there is currently 155,000 hectares (383,013 acres) of damaged land, 55,000 hectares (135,908 acres) of which he hopes to rehabilitate by the end of his six-year administration.
Peña Nieto said that in 2013, 211,000 hectares (521,392 acres) of land were recovered by planting 192 million seeds, and that he hopes to continue similar efforts.
“With the participation of the public and private sector as well as various institutions of the state and society as a whole, this goal can be achieved,” he said.
