Young people in Mexico are excluded, marginalized and disadvantaged in spite of public policy and initiatives by governments, says a researcher at the Metropolitan Autonomous University.
Researcher Alfredo Nateras Domínguez says that as many as 6 million young Mexicans are involved in the drug trade, while 60% of the inmates in the country’s jails are under 30 years old.
The bad news doesn’t end there: 220,000 youths emigrate every year, 22% show no interest in politics or elections and one of every four is the victim of violence.
Nateras also says 7 million youths are neither studying nor working.
He says public investment in cultural, sports and social programs are required to repair the social fabric of the country. A psychologist and anthropologist, Nateras claims police and security forces lack professionalism in how they deal with youth issues.
