TLALNEPANTLA DE BAZ - Dozens of Mexican human rights activists rallied Thursday to demand the country's most populous state do more to tackle high rates of violence and murder against women.
They gathered in the city of Tlalnepantla in the state of Mexico, urging officials to do more to put an end to crimes against women.
Located just North of Mexico City, the state of Mexico is the home state of President Enrique Peña Nieto.
It has also outranked drug-plagued Northern states to top Mexico's murder statistics for killing women.
Mexican Government statistics show nearly two-thousand women were murdered between 1990 and 2011 in the state.
Mexico has approved a number of laws and set up institutions to safeguard women from discrimination and violence for the past seven years, but human rights activists say the existing laws are not being used effectively to stop the crime.
