A man in Mexico tried to play dumb when cops raided his home looking for an illegal tiger — but the jig was up when the massive feline started growling at police from its hiding place.
Authorities in the district of Benito Juarez got a tip that Alejandro Gonzalez was keeping a Bengal tiger illegally at his house, Central European News reports.
The 40-year-old denied the allegation, but police knew something was up when they heard growling coming from a giant box covered with nothing but a blanket. Gonzalez tried to backtrack and claimed that the tiger was harmless.
“It is well-trained, it used to belong to a circus which sold it to me when they decided not to use animals anymore,” he told local media.
But the officers inspected the paperwork and realized his story was not on the up and up when the tiger turned out to not have the microchip that the paperwork said it would have. On top of that, Gonzalez was keeping the tiger in a cage that was too small for the animal’s massive body.
Gonzalez was arrested at his home and now faces charges of animal cruelty, according to CEN. The tiger is being cared for by a specialized animal task force of the Mexican police.
“We have the animal in care,” said task force spokeswoman Leticia Varela. “We are currently checking its health condition.”
