During President Felipe Calderon’s administration (2006-2012) more than 5,000 minors were arrested in Mexico for crimes related to drugs and organized crime, according to data provided by the government to the news website Revolucion 3.0.
About 350 of the detainees were female. The data also revealed that untill 2011, only 105 of the minors faced judicial processes, the rest of them were handed to their parents, relatives or to adoption centers.
The government documents that were provided by both the army and the Attorney General's office, state that about 60 percent of the detainees were linked to The Zetas and The Gulf cartels, two of the most brutal criminal organizations in Mexico.
The reports says that most of the minors were aware that they only could spend up to three years in prison, despite the crime they had committed. According to the Mexican constitution, any minor found guilty of any crime can only be sentenced to three years in prison.
Also, about 60 percent of the minors, according to authorities, received different types of training in areas that included use of weapons, kidnapping, killing, escorting, drug dealing and even infiltration of security agencies.
