EcoBici: Bike sharing program in Mexico City (ForgetTheDamnedCar)
Mexico City’s environmental secretary announced that this month it had clocked 19 million trips taken in the Federal District using the Individual Transport System EcoBici.
The EcoBikes are electronically secured at various stations throughout the city. Registered users can swipe their credit cards in the machine at each station to check out a bike, which charges them by the minute.
The system now has 139,000 users. The average duration of the 19 million trips was 6 minutes, for short jaunts of less than 8 km.
The city’s environmental agency also said that 70 percent of those trips occurred under the current city government, as the program has expanded considerably. Just this past year alone, 6.4 million trips were made, about 33 percent of the total reported trips since the initiative began. The quota of one million trips initially took one year to reach, but is now the average monthly rate.
