According to an indictment, beginning in 2007, Erick Silva employed several schemes to embezzle campaign contributions, accept kickbacks and defraud Matamoros of public funds.
Erick Silva Santos, former mayor of Matamoros, said that the accusations against him made by the U.S. government for money laundering, bank fraud and wire fraud are part of a media attack.
“It’s a media coup” said the ousted undersecretary of the state government, who blamed the “Matamoros group” of the National Action Party to which he belongs of trying to tarnish his image ahead of the looming elections.
Silva, who served as mayor of Matamoros from 2008-2010, said in an interview with Mexico City Newspaper EL UNIVERSAL that he is not hiding.
“I’m not a fugitive, it is pure gossip; I am in Matamoros, in my house, doing my normal activities,” Silva said.
“It is a media coup to distract attention from what is currently happening in Matamoros under Mayor Leticia Salazar,” he added.
...A complaint was filed at the Southern District Court in Brownsville, Texas after a year long investigation that was unsealed on November 10. A warrant remains outstanding for his arrest.
