2015 PainKiller Cup Quick Take (Charles Dasher)

Team Stand Up Mexico paddled away from the competition during the third annual Painkiller Cup this month.

Team Stand Up Mexico — Javier “Bicho” Jiminez, Ryan Helm and Shelby Taylor — dominated the 14-mile downwind course to win $5,000 with a time of two hours, 48 minutes and 30 seconds.

Organizers said the conditions were perfect with almost no wind, allowing the racers to paddle the course in nearly flat water for the entire race.

The event’s format features three-person teams, including one female, alternating as they paddle from Trellis Bay, Tortola to the Soggy Dollar Bar on Jost Van Dyke. There was also a Mini-Painkiller Cup course from Sandy Cay to the Soggy Dollar Bar. This year’s event also included a surf ski class, which features vessels similar to high-performance kayaks.
