The federal government will spend 86 billion pesos this year, about US $5.9 billion, on projects designed to improve conditions for indigenous communities.
The spending represents an increase of about 12 billion pesos over last year, and much of it will be directed to communities in Michoacán, Guerrero and Oaxaca. Most of the money will support water, electricity and drainage projects.
The National Institute of Statistics and Geography estimates that Mexico’s indigenous population totals about 15 million people representing 56 ethnic groups.
The head of the indigenous issues committee in the Oaxaca Chamber of Deputies described the allocation as generous, considering that no cuts were made in spite of the current economic situation.
