Mexico has what looks like an easy passage to the Gold Cup quarterfinals this July, but coach Miguel Herrera is rightly redoubling efforts to make sure nothing is taken for granted.
El Tri faces Cuba, Guatemala and Trinidad & Tobago in Group C of the competition and is a heavy favorite to advance, with the Soca Warriors the highest-placed group rival in the FIFA Rankings, sitting in 63rd.
"Calm, but conscious that sometimes these groups and these rivals can make us complacent and overconfident," was Herrera's assessment of the draw, which he attended in Philadelphia last week. "We have to work doubly hard because if we relax a little, we could be taken by surprise."
Mexico opens its Gold Cup campaign against Cuba on July 9 in Chicago, before facing Guatemala in Phoenix on July 12 and then closing out the group stage against Trinidad & Tobago in Charlotte three days later. In all three matches, El Tri fans will likely make up the majority in the NFL stadiums. Last year, Mexico played in the first two venues and therefore knows them well. There should be no surprises ... and compared to the United States' Group A, Mexico's Group C should be a breeze to navigate out of.
