UN marks International Day for elimination of racial discrimination (SABC Digital News)

The Afro-Mexican population, extremely small in number and lacking means for the defense of their human rights, can even become more vulnerable than the national indigenous groups, according to expert Eliot Elizalde González.

During the celebration of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, proclaimed by the United Nations on March 21, 1966, he said that indigenous groups also are in need of protecting their traditions and law systems.

Meanwhile, Elizalde González, from the Human Rights Program of the Pan-American University, said that according to the National Survey on Discrimination (Enadis), four out of every 10 women think that they must ask to permission before casting their electoral votes.

Also, 27% of the participants in the survey considered that non-Catholic people are not respected in the country, while 17% believes that female victims of rape brought it upon themselves. This percentage represents a fall of 4% over the results from the 2005 survey.

The most recent survey was elaborated in 2010 by the National Council for the Prevention of Discrimination.
