According to the latest data from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), which is part of the World Health Organization, every day in Mexico 12 women die of cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is the second leading cause of death among women. The IARC findings are from GLOBOCAN 2012, the IARC’s online database. It provides the most up to date estimates for 28 types of cancer in 184 countries worldwide.

The greatest number of cervical deaths is found in the states of Colima (23.9 percent), Morelos (16.1 percent), Veracruz (16.0 percent), Chiapas (15.9 percent) and Oaxaca (15.8 percent).

Lucely Cetina, a researcher at the National Cancer Institute, said “Unfortunately, 80 percent of the cases occur in advanced stages.”

Leslie Pantoja, a member of the committee on Health, said “despite public spending and a specific public policy, cervical cancer is now a public health problem due to the high number of deaths and the size of the population group.”

Flor Pedraza Aguilera, a member of the commission for Gender Equality, said, “Cervical cancer is linked to a condition of social inequality and gender inequality. In Mexico for cultural reasons and lack of access, women are still coming in [for treatment] at later stages.”

Euphrosina Cruz, president of the Committee on Indian Affairs, said the highest mortality rates are seen in those states with large indigenous populations.
