If you want to know what real Mexicanos think about their government, politics and life in general, you should be reading Animal Politico.
The Mexico City-based independent news site originally launched in 2009 as a Twitter feed called Pájaro Politico (Political Bird) and then grew to a website the following year. Today, Editor-in-Chief Dulce Ramos says they are the most read independent online news source in Mexico with 3.5 million visits each month. During the disappearance of the 43 students in Guerrero, she says, the site spiked to more than four million visits.
Ramos was in Austin, Texas recently for the International Symposium on Online Journalism where she discussed the success of the site during a panel entitled, “Women Leaders and Entrepreneurs in Online Journalism.”
Ramos later told the Rio Grande Guardian that the success of Animal Politico is its lack of corporate ties that allows the site to utilize an irreverent tone that has “put the focus back on the citizen in a media landscape where media and power have strong ties.”
In a country that is reeling from political corruption, that’s a great thing.
