Tour de Fox: 14,000 miles, 3 months, $1 Million for Parkinson’s research (Michael J. Fox Foundation)
Ever wanted to bike for a really good cause? Now could be your moment. The Michael J. Fox Foundation (MJFF) is hosting an extreme bike ride this summer called Tour de Fox, led by endurance athlete and MJFF staff member Sam Fox (who actually has no relation to Michael).
Starting on June 2nd in New York City, Fox, 28, will ride his bike 5,000 miles through 48 states plus Vancouver, Canada, climbing the highest peak in each state along the way. He’s planning to do all of this in only three months’ time, raising $1 million for Parkinson’s research all the while.
This is not the first time Fox has biked and hiked for a cause. In 2011, he ran 2,650 miles in 60 days on the Pacific Crest Trail, making his way from Canada to Mexico. That epic adventure led him to his (very fitting) job as the Michael J. Fox Foundation’s Outreach and Engagement Officer, where he inspires other extreme fundraisers to get involved.
But unlike his 2011 adventure, Fox is not aiming to do this one solo — he is encouraging others to join him (enter: you). Participants can hike, bike, or simply celebrate with him while he’s on the road.
In sum, there are 52 official excursions where you can climb or ride with Fox and his crew. Most of them are beginner-friendly, i.e., they do not require any hiking or biking experience. Extreme adventurers can also join him on one of the 10 Xtreme events, but be warned: Due to the difficulty of each excursion, you must apply for a spot.
If you’re not going to be around any of the excursion destinations, you can start your own ride in your area by becoming a Team Captain. And, finally, volunteers can also join the cause by simply celebrating with the crew along the way. There will be five big parties — in New York City, Atlanta, Chicago, Napa Valley, and Vancouver — and more events will be added along the way. Be sure to check the website frequently, or, if you have an idea for your own party, email the team at tourdefox@michaeljfox.org.
