Representatives from CNTE teachers union locals in 26 states across Mexico have agreed to boycott classes at the start of the upcoming school year to protest "repression" by officials.
Union representatives met Saturday in Oaxaca, the capital of the like-named southern state, to decide on actions to fight government education reforms.
About 3,000 teachers marched to the Monument to Mothers in the state capital's main plaza, where they held a rally across from the Government Palace.
Teachers oppose the education reforms implemented by the federal government and by Oaxaca Gov. Gabino Cue.
An executive order signed by the governor overhauling the Oaxaca State Public Education Institute, or IEEPO, and stripping the CNTE of administrative and financial control over the agency was published last Tuesday.
