Throughout the recent weeks that Republican presidential candidate front-runner Donald Trump has been insulting Mexican undocumented immigrants, calling them “rapists” and “criminals,” the Mexican government of President Enrique Peña Nieto has been conspicuously quiet.

Why engage, the Mexican thinking goes, if the “Trump phenomenon” will soon fade out.

But polls show that the more the billionaire real estate mogul turns up the volume of his anti-immigrant rant, the more his popularity rises among Republican voters. Last week, when most state and national polls gave Trump a comfortable lead over his Republican opponents, the Mexican government showed sings of starting to wake up to the realization that he can no longer be ignored.

After much public pressure from opinion makers, opposition politicians and average Mexicans, government officials are now responding, though cautiously, to Trump’s vilification of Mexicans.
